SOTL was welcomed into the United Church of Christ in 1992 and is the first congregation of a mainline denomination serving gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgender and allied people (GLBTA).

On October 25, 2009, the communities of Spirit of the Lakes UCC and Minnehaha UCC voted to begin joint habitation and worship at Minnehaha UCC, beginning December 6, 2009, in accordance with this proposal
